This article was developed using RN clinical expertise to ensure the content reflected the realities of bedside nursing and provided practical, credible guidance for nurses considering legislative advocacy.

Project Overview

Nurses have firsthand knowledge of how healthcare policies affect patient care, staffing, safety, and clinical practice. Yet frontline perspectives are not always represented in healthcare policy discussions.

For this article, I combined clinical nursing experience with medical writing skills to make legislative advocacy practical and accessible for bedside nurses.

My Role

As the RN Clinical Subject Matter Expert and Medical Writer, I developed content that was:

• Grounded in real-world nursing practice and clinical experience

• Written specifically for a bedside nursing audience

• Practical and accessible for time-conscious clinicians

• Focused on the connection between healthcare policy and patient care

Key Contributions

• Developed a three-level advocacy framework—Micro, Meso, and Macro—showing nurses how they can engage in advocacy through individual action, professional channels, and direct legislative involvement

• Translated the legislative process into a practical guide for nurses considering written or oral testimony

• Developed a framework for effective legislative testimony using evidence, clinical examples, and professional boundaries

• Created a 5-, 10-, and 15-minute advocacy framework showing how nurses can begin participating without a major time commitment

• Connected frontline clinical experience to broader issues including staffing, scope of practice, workplace safety, and patient outcomes

Clinical Value

Nurses are more likely to engage with advocacy guidance when it reflects the realities of clinical practice. This project demonstrates my ability to bring firsthand nursing perspective to complex healthcare topics while maintaining the accuracy, practicality, and credibility expected by a professional clinical audience.
